Scientific Materials Manager Of The Year

Philip Waite
Denison University

Philip A. Waite, Stockroom Supervisor and Chemical Hygiene Officer at Denison University, was named the 2007 Outstanding Scientific Materials Manager of the Year. Phil was recognized for his achievement with a presentation of a beautiful piece of Froebel art glass, compliments of Kimble-Chase Glass presented by Jerry Clark.

The Outstanding Scientific Materials Manager of the Year Award was created by NAOSMM in 1983 to honor managers who have distinguished themselves on the job and in their service to NAOSMM. These select few have demonstrated the highest level of dedication and commitment to their employers, customers, students, communities and NAOSMM. Phil has been an active member in NAOSMM, serving as webmaster for the past ten years on the Association’s website, www.naosmm.org.

Phil graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1975 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology. In December 1975, as a Peace Corps Volunteer, he went to Liberia, West Africa and taught high school science and math. He married Regina in November 1977, just before returning to the U.S. for a year. Together, they returned to Liberia and Phil taught science in the English division of a German iron mining company for four and a half years. He returned to the U.S. in late 1983. Phil started taking computer and mathematics courses at The Ohio State University while bartending to make ends meet.

Philip joined Denison in February 1986 in the Chemistry Department. In September 1986, he continued computer classes at Denison eventually totaling thirteen. In 1992, Phil accepted the position of Chemical Hygiene Officer and published Denison’s first Chemical Hygiene Plan on the Denison Campus Wide Information System (CWIS), a Bitnet platform. When the World Wide Web reached Denison, Phil developed the Security and Safety Web site, followed by the Department of Chemistry Web Site, and in 2002, he developed a Web-based inventory for all the Chemistry Department equipment and chemicals.
