Nalge Nunc International Professinal Training Fund Award

Each year several of our members are able to attend the Conference and Trade Show, thanks to the generosity of the Nalge Nunc International Company. The award was established in 1987 with the objective of assisting members to attend the Conference and Trade Show who might not otherwise be able to do so. You may apply for this award if you have been a member for the past 12 months and are currently employed at a stockroom/laboratory related job or if you purchase lab supplies for either a university/college or corporate institution.
This year Don Goetzman presented awards to seven members. They are:
  • Adrian Adams, Ball State University
  • Dennis Clark, Portland State University
  • Jim Glover, University of Nebraska
  • Treva Hagy, Florida State University
  • Stephen Milczanowski, Florida State University
  • Linda Perez, New Mexico State University

  • NAOSMM Seminar and Trade Show Grant

Five members attended the 23rd Annual Conference and Trade Show in New Orleans with the help of the NAOSMM Seminar and Trade Show Grant. President Shirley Buchi presented the awards to the recipients at the Awards Banquet on Thursday, August 1. This award is made possible by the support of our vendors and from revenue generated by the advertising you see in the NEWSLINE. Please support those vendors; they are supporting us. This years recipients of the award are:
  • Arlene Florence, College of South Idaho
  • Nancy Hitchins, Manatee Community College
  • Joanne Scillitoe, Princeton University
  • Philip Waite, Denison University
  • Jeff Your, John Caroll University

  • New Orleans Welcomes First-Timers

Back Dan Spellman, John Marlowe, Jerry Headlee, Carlos Baptiste, Rudy Stuart, Seth Ruskin, David Roberts, Carl Green
Front Becky Hahn, Carole Weaver, Jeanmarie Ford, Debra Shambro, Annie Campbell
New Orleans was HOT for NAOSMM and especially for 12 first-time Conference attendees. Four of that number have been members for, in some cases, several years but were new to our annual gathering. Again, this year, we had many of last year's first-timers back - some of whom have become actively involved. One even co-hosted this year's conference! We hope that this year's "class" will be back again and again, and we encourage you to contribute in any way you can.

Outstanding Scientific Materials Manager Award for 1996

A former President of NAOSMM and a Certified Scientific Materials Manager with permanent status, Dennis Clark added to his list of accomplishments when Bill Smutney of Kimble/Kontes named him the Outstanding Manager of the 1996 at the Awards Banquet of the 23rd Annual Conference and Trade Show.
A native of Portland, Oregon, he is manager of Chem Stores at Portland State University. Dennis began as storeroom clerk in 1978 and soon moved into his current position. He has had to deal with decentralization and downsizing resulting in greater and more diversified responsibilities for him. He says, "...like all of us, I thrive on the challenges of change, teaching and learning. The financial rewards will never be great, but the pride I feel in seeing others learn and grow to maturity, gives me a feeling of accomplishment only equaled by the teaching profession."
Dennis served in the U.S. Navy from 1965-67 as Second Class Petty Officer in Navigation. He earned a B.S, in Chemistry from Southern Oregon State College in 1973. He was supervisor of an inorganic lab at National Metallurgic before moving into the Stores position at Portland State University.
Dennis' interests include travelling, being a regular member of the Four Square Church, Eastern Philosophy and Martial Arts. Dennis also enjoys developing the mature relationships with his children, John Paul, 27, and Jill Pauline, 24.
In addition to having served as NAOSMM Program Chair in 1988-89, President in 1990-91 and Past-President in 1992-93, Dennis acted as facilitator for the Intra-action roundtables at the conferences in Tampa and Chicago. Dennis also has received Laboratory Management certification from CDC in 1986. Portland State University named Dennis Employee of the Year in 1989. He was also recognized by Sigma Xi the same year.

Special Award of Outstanding Service presented by the Executive Board
to Beverly Hall, Spectrum Quality Products

The Executive Board wishes to show its appreciation for outstanding service by presenting Beverly Hall this special award. Beverly's service has been in promoting membership in NAOSMM. She is responsible for twenty-one new members in our organization!
With the whole-hearted support of her company, she has run her own recruitment campaign. It is her company who foots the bills for mailing brochures and for phone calls to prospective members. In addition, Beverly is currently serving NAOSMM as representative for Corporate Publicity along with Bruce Eames of Mellinkrodt Baker, Inc.
Beverly began as Administrative Assistant to the National Sales Manager at Spectrum Chemical (now Spectrum Quality Products) in January 1993. During a catalog mailing update project, she met Eileen Torok by telephone. Eileen was so cordial and friendly that they had a great conversation and developed wonderful rapport. Beverly's manager overheard the conversation and offered her an Inside Sales position. She credits Eileen for being indirectly responsible for her promotion to her current position.
Beverly's message to us: "A primary NAOSMM goal is to boost attendance at next year's conference. While membership brings many benefits, the conference gives members the opportunity to share the warmth and friendship that I have been privileged to experience." Congratulations and thanks to you Beverly.

Joanne Brown is a young member who is just at the beginning of her career as a Scientific Magterials Manager. She received a B.S. in Biology from Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania in 1991. Upon graduation, she accepted her current position as Laboratory Supply Coordinator at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

Becoming certified showed my department and my boss that I have actively done something to improve my job skills. Certification will also help to justify the money I ask for each year to attend conferences. It was also personally staisfying to accomplish this."
