New Orleans Welcomes First-Timers
![]() Back Dan Spellman, John Marlowe, Jerry Headlee, Carlos Baptiste, Rudy Stuart, Seth Ruskin, David Roberts, Carl Green Front Becky Hahn, Carole Weaver, Jeanmarie Ford, Debra Shambro, Annie Campbell | New Orleans was HOT for NAOSMM and especially for 12 first-time Conference attendees. Four of that number have been members for, in some cases, several years but were new to our annual gathering. Again, this year, we had many of last year's first-timers back - some of whom have become actively involved. One even co-hosted this year's conference! We hope that this year's "class" will be back again and again, and we encourage you to contribute in any way you can. |

Two members became certified for the first time and one member received permenant certification. Shirley Buchli presented Joanne Scillitoe and Joanne Brown certification. Dennis Clark received permanent certification. Joanne Scillitoe is Coordinator of the Undergraduate Labs at Princeton University, a position she assumed in 1991. From 1983 to 1985 she worked as a Laboratory Technician for FMC Corporation in the Agricultural Chemical Group. Joanne left FMC to fill a position as Technical Secretary/Lab Technician for a research group at Princeton University. In 1987, she moved into the post of Undergraduate Secretary/Lab Preparator. After a two-year interval, during which she was a Quality Assurance Specialist in a Chemical Metabolism Contract Lab for Xeno Biotec Labs, she returned to Princeton University to her current position. Joanne holds a AAS in Biology and is currently working on a B.S. in Business Management at the Colleghe of New Jersey. Joanne is married to George Meindl and has one son, and three step-chlidren. Joanne joined NAOSMM in 1992, and has served on the Publicity Committee. She is currently Chairperson of the Hospitality Committee and member of the Web Site Committee. She became immediately interested in certification "as a formal acknowledgement of what I do on a daily basis." Joanne Brown is a young member who is just at the beginning of her career as a Scientific Magterials Manager. She received a B.S. in Biology from Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania in 1991. Upon graduation, she accepted her current position as Laboratory Supply Coordinator at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Joanne will be awarded a M.S. in Environmentat Protection and Safety Management from St. Joseph's University in January 1997, and is comtemplating working toward a MBA "from St. Joe's while I can still go for free!" Having also joined NAOSMM in 1992, Joanne attended her first conference in Valley Forge. She served as Advertising Manager for the NEWSLINE from 1994 to 1996 and is currently serving on the Hospitality Committee. When asked her motivation to become a certified Scientific Materials Manager, she said, "...a desire to be seen as more than a stockroom clerk, which often is the case. Becoming certified showed my department and my boss that I have actively done something to improve my job skills. Certification will also help to justify the money I ask for each year to attend conferences. It was also personally staisfying to accomplish this." Dennis Clark attained the status of a Certified Scientific Materials Manager with permanent standing. Dennis has been a NAOSMM member since 1985. One of our most accomplished members, he received certification in 1994 and was named Outstanding Manager of the Year in 1996. He is truly a leader, having served as Program Chair, President and Past-President as well as facilitator for the Intra-action Roundtables at two conferences.
