Outstanding Scientific Materials Manager of the Year

Larmar Houston from U. of Georgia
Lamar Houston of the University of Georgia and founder of NAOSMM is our Outstanding Manager of the Year. The award was presented by Keith Brodnick of Kimble/Kontes at the Awards Banquet.
After graduation from Wake Forest University, Lamar joined the sales force of Will Scientific, a small family-owned supplier that was purchased by VWR Scientific. Before the VWR acquisition, the University of Georgia offered Lamar the position of Director of Central Research Stores (CRS). Larmar assumed the responsibility of planning, setting up, and running a new central facility for the University and Experimental Stations.
Lamar has been asked to take on more and more responsibility including: glass shop; instrument shop; electronics shop and cartographic laboratory. The combination of these groups are now know as the Department of Research Services. In time, others groups became part of the Research Services including the Molecular Genetics Facility, the Flow Cytometer Facility, the Monoclonal Facility, the Ecology Department's Chemical Analysis Facility and the Chemistry Stockroom. The CRS is located three miles from the campus so the Chemistry Stockroom has be converted to Campus Scientific Stores and services all of the above listed departments.
In April of this year, Lamar was appointed to the position of Assistant Vice President of Research/Administration. Congratulations Lamar!

President's Award

Shirley Buchli completes her reign as NAOSMM President and receives awards from Ace Glass and Corning/Costar.

Award for Outstanding Service
Harold Standefer received the Special Award for Outstanding Service from Paul Yedlick. Since 1986 Harold has been the man responsible for making the trade show happen at the annual conferences. He was solely responsible for each show with duties including arrangements with the display companies and acting as liaison with the hotels. This year Harold is retiring and passing the torch to Paul Yedlik. Harold has done a superior job, setting a high standard for us to follow in the future.
Harold received a M. S. in Chemistry after serving in World War II as an aerial photographer in the Pacific. The worked for Sargent Welch from 1948 to 1983 as Sales Manager working his way up to Manager of the International Division. After he left Sargent Welch, he became Scientific Materials Manager at Louisiana State University thus enabling him to see our profession from both sides. This insight has been a valuable asset to our organization. Although Harold is retiring, he plans to stay active with NAOSMM and we're sure his point of view and advice will continue to play a part in future Trade Shows at our annual conferences.
