Preconference Workshops:

Seminar:  Becoming a Culture Expert:  Understanding the Intersection of Leadership Beliefs and Workforce Behaviors

8 hours 8:00am-5:00pm Sunday, July 26th  Cost $200.00

Lunch Break will be determined by instructor

The greatest risk we face is not the risk itself nor is it the workforce interacting directly with the risk.  The greatest risk we face is the culture of the organization, or how the leadership interacts with the workforce.  Organizational leadership must prepare, protect, and promote the workforce.  This workshop will utilize the process or risk mitigation to identify risks, discuss applied safety levels, leadership and workforce expectations, and intrinsic safety strategies.  All participants will receive a course manual and an e-reference tool (thumb drive) ? providing additional references and resources outside of the classroom experience.  Participants can expect a highly energized and interactive learning environment.

Presented by:

Christina L. Dillard, Assistant Director of The Laboratory Safety institute www.LabSafetyInstitute.org

A new CHO or an "old" one, will find something to put to real use in this fast-paced presentation. This seminar was developed by Russ Phifer, Christina Dillard, and Jim Kaufman (RJC Associates) for the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Health and Safety as the prep course for the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC) CHO Certification Exam. Topics include: OSHA Lab Standard, other lab regulations, role of the CHO, getting others involved, developing and implementing your CHP, lab hazards and resources. Bring your CHP so it can be reviewed.  For more information about the course, call 508-647-1900 or email Adams@labsafetyinstitute.org.

Participants will be introduced to key Biosafety reference materials and learn how to use them to perform basic biological risk assessments and establish appropriate levels of containment. We will review best practices to minimize the risk of laboratory acquired infections and standard precautions for proper handling of microorganisms. Discussions will be limited to Guidelines for safely handling microorganisms at both biosafety level 1 (BSL1) and  biosafety level 2 (BSL2) with minimal introduction to biosafety level 3 (BSL3). Anthrax and Ebola:  The Importance of Organizational Culture in Safety

Abstract: Every organization has a culture ? but does the organizational culture promote or prohibit workforce safety?  Using examples from the CDC Laboratory Anthrax Incident and Workforce Preparedness Response Efforts for Ebola in the United States and West Africa, Sean Kaufman will discuss the impact of organizational culture on safety initiatives.  Trust between organizational leadership and the workforce promotes a transparent culture.
When it comes to safety, hope is an expensive commodity ? it is better to be aware of what is happening rather than ignorant of it.  This presentation will discuss leadership and workforce expectations and explore unintentional reverse safety outcomes of existing programs.

Professional Development Seminar - Sean Kaufman (Tuesday, July 28th)

The Power of Listening

Abstract: Shhhhhhhh!  Don?t just listen to the words ? but hear the tone, watch the body, and absorb what is being said.  The time for you to be heard will come ? but for now ? it is time for you to listen.   Learning to listen with our ears, eyes, mind, and heart is a skill which will take substantial practice.  Over 55% of our communication with the world is spent listening ? so practice can begin right now ? even as you are reading this.  Participants can expect demonstrations, examples, and information which will lead to increased skills in listening and asking the right questions.  Part of listening is asking ? and asking the right question at the right time.  Carl Rogers said, "Our inability to communicate is a result of our failure to listen effectively, skillfully, and with understanding to another  person.?  This presentation will increase awareness of active listening, strategic questioning, and provide participants with exercises to increase skills and abilities.
