We then move deep discussion of hazard and risk. Then, using a variety risk management tools such as the LabRAT and "What-if," we evaluate common research tasks and scientific field work. The day is wrapped up with a session of "Ask Dr. Safety" so that participants can get their EH&S questions answered before they leave.

Sunday  - 8:00am - 4:30pm:

Why It Went Wrong: Blame-free investigation of lab-scale incidents:

Many scholarly and practical publications are available addressing incident investigation. None, however, is devoted strictly to the unique environment of the teaching and research laboratories. The purpose of this workshop is to provide methods for investigating laboratory-scale incidents to elucidate the underlying (root) causes and the direct and contributing causes those incidents. The workshop participant will learn methods for conducting an investigation and how to structure a report using a blame-free approach. Presentation methods will include lecture and discussion and role-playing incident investigations. The participants will study the incident investigations of several well-documented actual events and then practice investigation skills in presented scenarios.
